Introduction

The SMART Board and the SMART Notebook are powerful new tools that can help integrate technology into classroom lessons and can help engage students in learning. Teachers need to learn to use the board as well as the Notebook program to build upon lessons they already have and to create new ways of teaching children in the 21st Century.

Rationale

Students and teachers everywhere are benefitting from the use of SMART products in their classrooms. Students are more engaged in the lessons and teachers are finding new ways of sharing information with their students. The SMART Board comes with a software program called SMART Notebook and teachers should be able to use this program as a teaching tool with the use of a SMART Board. It allows the users to incorporate the many functions of the Board. Using a SMART Board without the SMART Notebook program is possible, but the user than is not making the most of what the board can do. It is important that a SMART user, knows and uses the many tools that are available with the board.

General Goals

This curriculum web was developed by a middle school technology teacher who wanted to teach teachers how to use the SMART Notebook software that accompanies a SMART Board. Most teachers were using the board for PowerPoint presentations, but were not using the very powerful teaching software that comes with the board. The SMART Notebook software makes it possible for teachers to create content rich, dynamice lessons which address specific student skills. This unit was developed as a way to introduce teachers to the many tools that are available to them with the Notebook program and to get them excited about new ways of teaching the leaders of tomorrow.

Instructional Plan

The Instructional Plan of this site is divided into four parts which will take place over four weeks. Teachers will meet once a week in the lab for 45 minutes of instruction and then work throughout the week to complete the activities from the class.

  1. Teachers will learn the basics of using a SMART Board. This includes learning to connect the Board to the computer and projector, to align the board for use, and to use the tools that come with the Board.
  2. Teachers will learn to use the SMART Notebook software program. They will learn the basics of how to create a new notebook, add new pages to the notebook, save, print, take screen shots, modify the views and add graphics or templates.
  3. Teachers will learn to use Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and the SMART Board together as classroom teaching tools.
  4. Teachers will design a week of lessons for their classrooms that will integrate the use of the SMART Board as much as possible. Teachers will pre-design notebooks to use during the lessons, as well as plan how to incorporate as much student involvement with the board as possible during their lessons.

Materials

Materials needed include:

Plan for Assessment and Evaluation

The teachers will self assess their ability to connect the board to the computer and projector using a rubric/checklist. Each teacher will have the opportunity to individually connect a board to the computer and align it with the projector. After completing the task, teachers will fill out the self assessment rubric and turn it in to the moderator.

After learning how to use the notebook program, the teachers will create a document based on certain requirements. Upon completion, the teachers will save the document as a pdf, print a copy for themselves and e-mail a copy to the moderator. The moderator will meet with each teacher and use a rubric to assess whether the requirements were met.

After learning to use the Microsoft Office programs with the board, teachers will open three different types of documents, make adjustments to them, save them and e-mail them to the moderator.

After creating and teaching the lessons with a class, the teachers will ask their students to fill out a survey regarding the use of the SMART Board in the classroom. The teacher will read the surveys, and turn them in to the moderator.

The teachers will also journal about their experiences with the SMART Board throughout the week they have it and reflect upon their success with the lessons while using the board and program. A summary will be written and turned in to the moderator at the end of the week.
