Words and Pictures

 

"The goal of a quality visual arts education is for the student to become a critical observer and thinker. Each student should become more aware of the role of the visual arts in our lives and society as a whole."

Materials: You will need white unlined paper, lined paper, a soft lead pencil, a ruler, and coloring materials such as crayons, colored pencils, or markers.

Assignment 1.

You are to critique the illustration pictured below. First look at the image, read the text below it and respond in writing to each suggestion.

"Jimi jolts Dali" by Turtel Onli©2002 Surrealistic art and Heavy Metal Rock music were invented during the 20th century. Salvador Dali was considered one of the most important Surrealists and Jimi Hendrix was the epitome of innovative rock musicians. Both were extremely influential and had amazing levels of technical ability. Their imagination at times appeared to be beyond our definition of reality. Many artists and musicians are compared to them. Both of them actually have museums that were created in their honor. They both believed that technique and form should support the creative concept.

What is being communicated or expressed in this illustration? What does the title tell you about the relationship between the two figures in the image? Why were Salvador Dali and Jimi Hendrix considered important creative professionals during the 20th Century?

Assignment 2.

Review the superhero image at the top of this page closely. Look at each character along with the overall mood of the illustration. Evaluate it using the Four Step method by responding to the following suggestions.

Describe the actual image.

Analyze it based on art elements and art principles.

Interpret the image in terms of what it may say and what you are deriving from it.

Judge the image based on your opinion and how well it all unites as a complete work of art.

 

Assignment 3.

Write a two page paper that establishes a connection between at least three aspects of the visual arts process and the composition of a typical comic book. Use the research links below as you source materials.
