Field Experience

This course provided educators with an overview of issues related to the selection, installation, and maintenance of computer networks in school settings. Students identified, described, and analyzed procedures related to basic troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and procurement of networking services. Students explored ways of working with technology support personnel to maximize the use of technology resources to improve student learning. Students researched, evaluated, and developed a needs assessment and a proposal used to determine what specifications are needed to fulfill district/school requirements.

Rationale:

ISTE-TF.1 STANDARD: Technology Operations and Concepts -- Educational technology facilitators demonstrate an in-depth understanding of technology operations and concepts.
My RTP demonstrated my understanding of the equipment and procedures involved in creating a local network within the confines of larger network.

ISTE-TF.2 STANDARD: Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences -- Educational technology facilitators plan, design, and model effective learning environments and multiple experiences supported by technology.
The creation of the local network provides for a technological experience for many different learners in various classes.

ISTE-TF.6 STANDARD: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues -- Educational technology facilitators understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in P-12 schools and assist teachers in applying that understanding in their practice.
By placing a local area network with additional computers in classrooms many different learners a serviced.

ISTE-TF.7 STANDARD: Procedures, Policies, Planning, and Budgeting for Technology Environments -- Educational technology facilitators promote the development and implementation of technology infrastructure, procedures, policies, plans, and budgets for P-12 schools.
Through the creation of a local network in my RTP I was able to create different scenarios and keep within a budgeted range.

ISTE-TF.8 STANDARD: Leadership and Vision -- Educational technology facilitators will contribute to the shared vision for campus integration of technology and foster an environment and culture conducive to the realization of the vision.
Equipment was chosen that would be supported for years to come. Additionally the equipment that was chosen due to its ability to be supported for a time to come.

Reflection:

I found this assignment to be very challenging on many levels. Currently at school we are going through a turbulent technological time. So finding information on the current network was hard to do. I also hand no background on networks so finding the right equipment was difficult. I do believe my final product was successful. It would be beneficial if my plans could be carried out within the art department.
