Belief Statement:
Technology is all around us. It affects our lives on a daily basis. Some may argue that it makes life better while others argue that it is an evil that needs to be controlled.
For a student in the classroom it must be both an exciting and scary time. With all of the technological advances in the world, it is only a natural transition technology to become an important part of the classroom. Teachers now have unlimited resources through computer and Internet connections that they can incorporate into their pedagogy. Teachers now can access actual footage from N.A.S.A., whereas educators only a decade ago had to rely on a textbook.
Technology now assists the needs of all types of learners. The gifted learner can be catered to simply by a teacher choosing a computer program that covers identical material as the rest of the class, but takes a more challenging route to the answers. A learner who needs more assistance can possibly replay the program several times, and at their own pace work to achieve the correct answer.
It is a wonderful time to be a teacher in the classroom. The material you can cover and the access to different and relevant issues is endless. To make students want to learn you must make the information relevant to their lives. They need to see that “yes I need to know this, I will use it later.”
With the technological advances it is also an exciting and scary time for teachers. As an educator you need to be technologically literate. As Raven McCrory stated in the book, Meaningful Learning Using Technology,“ teachers need knowledge in two categories; first they need to be able to identify and develop technologies into tools for meaningful learning, and second, teachers need to have a useful portfolio of technologies that engage students in meaningful learning.”
I firmly believe in the statement from McCrory. Teachers do not need to be technological experts, but they do need to know what technologies will work and when to use those technologies.
