The Process

I.                   In order to complete the research, you will need to assign team members to the following responsibilities:

o      Scientist

·       The scientist is responsible for researching how the alternative energy works.  They will need to research how this alternative energy is used and why it works.  They will also need to prove why this alternative energy was chosen for the Chicagoland area.

o      Historian

·       The historian is responsible for research on geographical sites that have used this alternative energy before.  The historian will research how this alternative energy came into existence and how well it has done in the past.  The historian will need to research how many communities presently use this alternative energy source.

o      Accountant

·       The accountant will be responsible for researching all of the costs going into the alternative energy power plant.  This includes how much it will cost in order to start the alternative energy site, how much it will cost to maintain it, and how much it will cost to consumers.

o      Environmentalist

·       The environmentalist is responsible for finding any environmental effects that occurred on sites that already use this type of alternative energy.  This includes any advantages and disadvantages of the alternative energy.  This research should include any effects on the safety of humans, animals, or any other living thing.  It should also include any effects on the environment.

II.                Now that you have assigned the group members to assigned roles, you will need to determine which alternative energy you feel is the best for the Chicagoland area.  Remember that there is no right answer.  You will need to state your case on why you feel the alternative energy you chose is the best for the Chicagoland area.  You will now research the different types of alternative energies that are available for use.  You may use the research page or research the Internet or library on your own.  Here is a brief list of alternative energies you may want to use:

o      Wind

o      Hydroelectric

o      Solar

o      Biomass

o      Nuclear

If you find another type of alternative energy you may like to use, you may go ahead and do so.  Just remember to do plenty of research and prove why you believe that alternative energy is best.

a.     At this time, please notify the instructor of the roles you have assigned and which alternative energy your group has selected.  Your instructor will let you know if you may continue on with the process.

III.             Now that you have selected your alternative energy, you will now break into your assigned roles.  Research your alternative energy and look for facts that fall into your assigned role.  The more information, the more proof you will have when you are presenting your case.  Once again, you may use the resources found on the resource page or you may research on your own.

IV.           Now that you have finished your research, you will write your paper and prepare your presentation for evaluation.  If you have any questions about what is required, please look back at the task page.

a.     During this time, please give discuss your findings with the instructor.  Give the instructor an overall idea of what you plan on presenting.

V.              You will hand in your paper and present your findings to the City of Chicago.
