Conclusion
Patches for the Tuskegee
Squadrons: the 99th, the 100th,
the 301st, and the 302nd.
Congratulations, you have just
completed a journalistic feat in publishing your own newspaper!
This research and newspaper
project increased
your knowledge of the historical contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen
and
their long battle to receive recognition for their outstanding
meritorious service to America during World War II. Concurrently,
you have gained valuable skill in the art of news research and
reporting.
You might debate such questions
as: "Is
history reported accurately through the news media?" or "What
influence does the printed media have on the general population,
military personnel, politicians, etc.?"
If you had researched the
Tuskegee Airmen
prior to 1990, you may have gotten a totally different historical
perspective.
Scary thought! It was not until the movie (The Tuskegee Airmen)
came out in 1995 that awareness of the black historical perspective
became
more widespread and the Tuskegee Airmen were given true
recognition.
Finally, this project is also a
lesson in segregation and civil rights. The story of the Tuskegee
Airmen is just one of many instances in which the historical
accomplishments of a minority group (i.e., women, blacks) were
overlooked. Can you think of other people whose steadfast
pursuits paved the way for equal rights for others?
Most importantly, keep an open
mind as
you read the daily newspaper or search on the Internet.
AND
Remember the Tuskegee Airmen!
