Evaluating Educational Sites

There are millions of web pages and sites that claim to be educationally sound and useful. Some are and some are not. As an educator, how do you determine which pages are valid and may be used by you? Click here to visit the Todd Wehr Library at St. Norbert's College and read about criteria for evaluating sites. The author points out the following indicators: authority, accuracy, content/coverage, objectivity, access and design/appearance. What do you think is most important when looking for appropriate sites? Do you have some additional criteria that is specific to your needs that would apply?  Answer these questions in Activity 1 of this module.  Post your reply to each of these questions under the appropriate topic in the discussion form.  Reply to at least 4 of your classmates.

You will need an Evaluation Checklist for Activity 2. Gather all your things; we are going to take a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry web site.  Browse the exhibits. You will use one checklist for each exhibit you visit. Look for those key indicators discussed in the readings (listed on your checklist) that tell you this is a valid site. Note comments for your use. We will discuss our trip when we return.

Post your critique of a site in the Critiques discussion forum.  Be sure to include the site name with the link.  A description of the site and your evaluation using the indicators discussed in the Wehr reading should be present.  You may give a brief response about each of the indicators and an overall impression of the site, including usefulness and how it might be used with your students.  Click here for the rubric that will be used to assess your work.

Activity 3 is the final assignment of this module.  Post a summary of your reflection about this module.  Include what you have learned and what you are unclear about.  This should be posted in the reflections forum for this module.
