First Semester/First Quarter Syllabus

Nine-Week Syllabus

September 5, 2005 - November 4, 2005

Week 1 (9/5—9/9) 4-day week
Labor Day Holiday Monday. Intro to ITGS. Discuss Room 117/Computer use, maintenance, and stewardship as well as storage of materials and timeliness. Course information and expectations. IB requirements and testing explained. Maintenance of dossier (dates of articles) and logbooks explained. Discussions of vocabulary terms related to Information Technology, Ethics, Plagiarism, et. al... ITGS IB documents and related terminology. Discuss computer models, specifications, versions, systems in general terms. Discuss areas of impact and have students give examples of topics for each. Begin collecting articles from news, magazines, websites. Give out technology survey

Week 2 (9/12—9/16)
Issue and introduce Computer Confluence and CD-ROM for same. Friday article dossier check. Begin Chapter 1 of Computer Confluence with focus on computer origins, types and terminology. Discuss ethical implications of computer advancement. Discussion questions from Chapter 1. Handout portfolio piece guidelines and discuss criteria and grading. Discuss grading vocabulary and definitions. Tech articles check.

Week 3 (9/19—9/23)
Discuss importance of article date, attachment and bibliography. Handout copies of samples portfolio pieces and have students grade them using criteria and terminology. Discuss ethical implications of technology in education. Assign practice portfolio piece (800-1000) words with attached news article (due Friday, 9/30/05). Begin Computer Confluence Chapters 2 and 3—Hardware and Peripherals discuss concepts and definitions. Demonstrate how to determine a computer’s specs.

Week 4 (9/24—9/30)*
1/2 Day on Tuesday. Article selection for Portfolio Piece #2 and approval sheet due. Complete Chapters 2 and 3, including questions for discussion. Complete CD-ROM chapter reviews and quizzes. Discuss social/ethical implications of the disposability and advancements of hardware and peripherals. Tech articles check. 5-week evaluation on Thursday. Practice Portfolio Piece Due Friday!

Week 5 (10/3—10/7)
Individual meetings to discuss Practice Portfolio Piece grades and comments. 5-week exam (IB practice test question). Write Criterion A and submit for approval for Portfolio Piece #1. Begin Chapter 4—Software.

Week 6 (10/10—10/14) 4-day week
Columbus Day on Monday. Discuss software—definitions and differences between freeware, shareware, site liscences, etc... Analyze and discuss ethical implications of software downloading and sharing. Use IB Syllabus guide to foster discussion of ethical implications (pairs of students analyze a situation each). Tech articles check.

Week 7 (10/17—10/21)*
1/2 Day on Thursday. GUI’s. Define interfaces, analyze and discuss their evolution and implications. Locate news article related to GUI’s. Predict future of GUI’s. Announce that Portfolio Piece #1 Due 11/3/05.

Week 8 (10/24—10/28)
Individual meetings to discuss Practice Portfolio Piece grades and comments. Begin Chapter 5, 6—Word Processing, DTP, Spreadsheets. Tech articles check.

Week 9 (10/31—11/4) 4-day week
Professional Development Day on Friday. End of Quarter. 10-week evaluation on Tuesday. Design a short project to demonstrate mastery of word processing, DTP and spreadsheet mastery. Portfolio Piece #1 is Due on Thursday!

Notes:

1) Portfolio Piece deadlines are set in stone. 3 copies of each must be submitted with copies of the inspiration articles attached to them.

2) Assignments are subject to changes posted one week in advance.

3) Homework turned in one late may receive ¾ credit. Homework past one day late may only be accepted by arrangement with teacher.

4) Class grades are posted weekly by ID number on-line.
