TIE 533 Application Tools for Inquiry Learning

Course Description:
This course will explore the use of productivity tools and instructional software for curricular and administrative applications. Candidates will use advanced features of productivity tools to evaluate artifacts and data for instructional decision-making, and they will use the knowledge base on integrating technology to guide application of specific strategies in support of problem-based curricula. In addition, candidates will assist one or more teacher(s)/colleague(s) in using recommended tools and strategies.

Artifact Description:
Productivity Tool for Decision Making. The main objective of this project is to provide to the school administrators, teachers and all the participants involved in the school curriculum, information for the ACT test. This information can be used to:  Map the development of the students’ knowledge and skills in reading, English, mathematics, and science.  It also analyzes the students’ progress to identify areas of strength and areas that need more attention and finally, it helps determine subsequent steps in the instructional planning process. This tool will allow administrators and teachers to customize reports (based on criteria such as gender or ethnicity) and to assist them as they assess students’ readiness for college coursework.

Professor: Carleen Shaffer

Date completed: Summer 2006

Software used: Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Reflection on the artifact: In this class, I realized the importance for teachers to be able to analyse their own database and use the data-analysis for decision-making to modify the curriculum. Spreadsheet data and its graphical representation of the analysis provide a most suitable and inviting environment for data analysis. I plan to address diverse student needs (cognitive, emotional, physical  and social) Therefore, I will create my own database and self-assessment tool to monitor my teaching.  This will allow me to keep track of my performance and to approach students when they need it.  Once I am more familiar with my colleagues, I will suggest that they implement an assessment tool that will help them to utilize the data for the benefit of their students.
