• Read the book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig. Ask the children : What can Sylvester do as a pebble? Why? Is he a nonliving thing? How do you think it would feel to be a nonliving thing? If you could be any nonliving thing what would you be? Write a sentence and draw a picture of you as a nonliving thing.
  
• Read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle and/or Frog and Polliwog to discuss plants' life cycle.
  
• K-W-L
  Take the class on a walk outside the classroom. Ask the children to look for living things and think about the things living things need to grow.
  Go back into the classroom. Complete the charts What We Know About Living Things and What We Want To Know About Living Things.

  What do animals need? water, air, need food, shelter
  What do animals do? move, grow, reproduce
  What do plants need?
  Plants need water, sun, soil, air and space to grow.
  Plants cannot move.
  Plants produce their own food with light and water. This process is called photosynthesis.
  Both plants and animals have a life cycle where they grow and change.
