SCIENCE:  Living/Non-living Things

Goals: 12A3,12A4

Objective:  to define Living and Non-living Things, to distinguish between the two categories, to find examples of each and classify them, and to demonstrate understanding of findings through journal entries.

Activities:

a)      (Pre-assessment - teacher may need to model this for students) KWL what do students KNOW about        Living Things, Non-Living, parts of a plant, what a hypothesis is, what plants need to grow, etc. What do they WANT to know about these things and what have they learned.

b)      (Research/Activity) Students will be asked to go to the class website and see what information they can find to help them define what living things are and what non-living things are.

(Assessment) In Journals students will need to answer the following questions:  What are the four characteristics       of Living Things?  How do we define Non-Living things and how do non-living things differ from living things?

c)      (Review) Students will need to review their KWL in their journals to see what info they covered in class  previously and to see what they have learned.  Teacher will have students fill in the “L” part of their chart.

d)     (Pre-assessment) Students will need to write what they think are some examples of both “Living and Non-Living Things.”

e)      (Research/Activity) Students will go to class website to find examples of “Living/Non-living Things.”  Students will be able to check their ideas with those presented on the webpage and they will be asked to record at least three other examples they found from the webpage.

f)        (Review) Students will need to review their KWL in their journals to see what info they covered in class previously and to see what they have learned. Teacher will have students fill in the “L” part of their chart.

g)     (Pre-assessment) In Journals students will be asked to classify some items that they learned about previously. The teacher will mix items up for students on the chalkboard and students will record these items in their journals in their appropriate classification column titled “Living or Non-living.”

h)      Activity – Science Lab (students will go to lab and work with partners classifying items)

i)        Activity – Touch and Feel (students will feel in brown bag items and try to determine, which things are living or non-living)

j)     (Research/Activity) Students will go to class webpage and take an online assessment of classifying       “Living/Non-living Things.”  Students will print out their results of the quiz or record their results in their journals.

k)    (Assessment)  Students will need to write about what they learned from doing this activity; that is what did they learn from being able to classify “Living/Non-living Things?”  Their explanations will need to include how they were able to apply the four characteristics to items to help them determine their classification.

Final Assessment:  Students will need to draw a picture of a Living or Non-living thing and write a small report about the item stating what it is, what classification it is, and why or how they know.  Students will share their final assessment in class with others.

Assessments:  KWL charts, journal entries, quiz scores, written report, drawing, and performance assessment.

Homework:  none

Materials:  computers. Journals, pencils and crayons (optional).

Mini Lesson: Plants What are the four parts of a plant?  What things do seeds or plants need to grow?  Does  anyone remember what a “hypothesis” is?  Remember when we did our experiments and I  asked you all what is your hypothesis for what will happen to the seed? Story Time—Teacher will read the book, How Do Plants Grow?

Assessment:  KWL

Extension

Goals: 12A3,12A4

Lab Activity: students will need to classify and sort the parts of the plant we eat.  Once classification is done with lab partners, students will be asked to draw their work on a piece of paper.

Materials: Lab classification sheets, part of the plant worksheets, and pencils.

Assessment:  class discussion

Homework:  None
