Don York, Co-Director
Education:
University of Chicago
PhD: 1971 in Astronomy and Astrophysics
MIT
BS: 1966 in Physics
Don has been at the University since 1982, following 12 years at Princeton as a post doc and, finally, Research Astronomer. He is now the Horace B. Horton Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University. Don directed the construction of Apache Point Observatory, home of a 3.5 meter general purpose telescope and of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. His research is in the field of interstellar material and intergalactic matter, aka, galaxy formation and the origin of the elements of the periodic table.
Following 20 years of bringing new technologies to astronomical projects, and watching careers change because of it, Don has an abiding belief that technology provides some answers to the current challenges in education in the public schools. Working first with graduate student volunteers and later with a paid professional staff, Don has helped implement all of the CUIP programs.
