In your quest as a geologist
you will find the answers to these questions and more. You will journey
through the world of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks and excavate
for rocks. You will take this journey with a partner.
Get ready, get set. Go!
A geologist is a scientist
who studies how
the Earth was made and what
the earth is made of. You and your partner will be geologists on an
excavation looking for different rocks.You will be able to identify
the rocks by their size, color and the type of rocks they are. Geologists classify rocks
into three groups: sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous.
Geologists, you will first travel through
the land of sedimentary rock and
record your info about different rocks on the Rock Descriptor Journal page.Sedimentary Rock is formed from soil and rocks compressed
over a long period of time. You will then travel through the land of Metamorphic Rock. Then you will continue your journeythrough
the land of Igneous rock which is developed from hot lava emitted from
a volcano
which is cooled once outside of the
volcano.
*Next you will take your notes from your journey to make a crossword
puzzle at Puzzlemaker .
*Then you will take a journey with your partner back through Think Quest
to test your knowledge about rocks by doing a Rock Quiz.
*After that you will end up in Geology
Land to discover how we use rocks.
*Then you will decide which use of rocks is the most interesting to you
and make an ad on a poster to sell your rock.
*Finally you and your partner will do an oral presentation of your
ad in class.
After listening to the book Rock Collecting by Roma Gans you will
begin your journey through different lands of rocks. You will travel through
Sedimentary Rock Land, Metamorphic Rock Land and Igneous Rock Land.
You will then go to Think Quest and continue your journey
through Geology. To take your journey you must:
Day 1 & Day 2 & Day 3
First choose
a partner.
Next with your
partner click on Rock Descriptor
and make a copy
of the Rock Descriptor Journal page.
Now click on Sedimentary
Rock. Then click on
Metamorphic
Rock. Last click on Igneous
Rock.
Write the names
of the rocks and the descriptions on
the Journal
page.Save it in your Rocks Folder.
Day 4
Take out your
Rocks Descriptor Journal page. With
the names of the
rocks and their descriptions you will
make a crossword
puzzle. Click on Puzzlemaker.
Make
sure that yourdefinitions are short but good. Make 4 copies
of the puzzle. You and your partner keep one copy to put
in
your Rocks Folder.Exchange your puzzle
with another
group of partners. You and your partner do the
puzzle you get and save it in your Rocks Folder.
Day 5
After that you
will take the Name
That Rock quiz.
Make a copy of your
test when you are finished taking
it. Put this in your
Rocks Folder.
Day 6 & Day 7
Next you will travel
to Geology
Land to find one use for
rocks. Then
you will make your poster. In your ad
remember you are trying
to sell your rock to the class.
Use bright colorful
lettering that we can see and use
pictures that are
interesting and will grab someone's
eye. You can use pictures
from magazines or get
pictures
from the computer at these sites:
Day 8
Finally you and your
partner will present your ad to
the class. Be ready to answer lots
of questions about
the rock you have
chosen for your ad.
