Effects and Transitions

Effects and Transitions effect how your movie looks without adding or removing graphics. Effects change how a graphic looks or acts while it is being displayed in your movie. Transitions change how the movie goes from one graphic to the next.

Effects

To view the effects, click on 'Video Effects' under 'Edit Movie' in the Movie Tasks column on the left side of the page. To see what an effect will do, click on the effect and then click the 'play' button on the player on the right side of the screen. If it just sits there, being blurry, for example, it will change how the picture looks the whole time it is shown in your movie. If there is motion, like 'Ease In,' it will change the behavior of your picture in the movie.

To apply an effect to a picture, click on the effect, drag it down, and drop it right on top of the picture. Apply at least two or three to your project. Notice that you can have more than one on each picture, but they will occur at the same time. So it can Fade In and Fade from White without any problem. But if you apply 'Fade In' and 'Fade Out,' they will occur at the same time and nothing will seem to happen. To remove an effect, right-click on the picture and click 'Video Effects.' You will see a list of the effects you have applied to the picture. To remove one, click on it and click 'Remove.'

Transitions

To view the transitions, click on 'Video Transitions' under 'Edit Movie' in the Movie Tasks column on the left side of the page. To see what a transition will do, click on the effect and then click the 'play' button on the player on the right side of the screen. To apply the transition, click on it and drag it down between two pictures. Notice that under the pictures on the timeline, in the row labeled 'Transitions,' a small box has appeared (if you don't see the 'transitions' row, click on the + next to the word 'Video' to the left of the timeline.) By making that box larger or smaller, you can make the effect last over more or less time. You can also click on the box and delete it to remove the transition.

After you have played for a while, think about your project. Effects should only be used if they enhance your project, drawing attention to key issues. If overused, they can be a distraction. Go back and remove any effects you feel are excessive.
